The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has articulated his decision to join the opposition coalition in order to contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

In a message posted on his official X account on Thursday, he emphasized that no single group can effect change in Nigeria independently, asserting that to dismantle the APC, it is essential to construct bridges, even when such efforts may be challenging.

The former governor of Anambra State stated that the coalition’s members are dedicated to collaborating towards the 2027 general elections.

He expressed, “Yesterday, the coalition members officially endorsed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark appointed as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary.
“Our pledge is to make sacrifices and work collectively towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria receives a leadership that is competent, capable, and compassionate, prioritizing the future of the nation by placing the welfare of Nigerians at the forefront.
“This decision was reached after careful consideration of our current situation as a country and the necessary steps to progress.

“No single group can transform Nigeria alone. To dismantle the systems that perpetuate poverty and insecurity among our people, we must construct bridges rather than walls, even when those bridges may be difficult to build.”

Leaders and members of the opposition coalition gathered at the Yar’Dua Centre in Abuja for a meeting on Wednesday, where they declared the ADC as their platform for the 2027 election.

In addition to Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, and numerous others were in attendance at the meeting.

Other attendees included Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and Sadique Abubakar.
