Kenneth Okonkwo, who previously served as the Spokesman for the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, has refuted claims of betraying the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 election.
Okonkwo appeared as a guest on a televised show, asserting that he did not consult any of Obi’s competitors during the election.
He stated, “While I was working for him, I did not consult any politician. I am making this public declaration. I did not engage with any political party. I was completely loyal.
“When I departed, I informed everyone…I declared that from that moment, I would no longer represent this individual.
“They fail to grasp the true meaning of betrayal. Anyone who is writing or speaking negatively about me is merely reflecting their own character; it does not represent who I am.”
In July 2024, Okonkwo, a passionate supporter of Obi during the previous election, severed ties with the former Anambra governor and left the Labour Party.
The actor-turned-lawyer-turned-politician expressed his dissatisfaction with the internal conflicts within the LP and Obi’s inability to address them.
On Sunday, Okonkwo, now an active participant in the coalition aiming to defeat President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election, challenged Obi to explain to the public how he betrayed him after exiting the party.
“I will permit Obi to hold his own views. In our faith, we do not engage in conflicts for God. Since he insinuated that Jesus had 12 (disciples) and one betrayed him, he seems to be positioning himself as the Jesus in that analogy.
“How can one betray someone they are not working for?” Okonkwo inquired, while also denying that he received any money or property from Obi during the last election campaign.
