Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has successfully completed the renovation of the historic Gidan Kuli groundnut oil mill located in the Kankia Local Government Area. The revitalized mill is set to commence full operations shortly, with the potential to generate over 500 direct and indirect jobs, thereby enhancing the local economy. The Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYCV) undertook the comprehensive renovation, which involved upgrading existing machinery, acquiring modern equipment, and constructing administrative offices, retail spaces, and perimeter fencing.
In a statement regarding this initiative, Governor Radda emphasized that the facility represents more than just economic infrastructure; it embodies a commitment to rejuvenating the agricultural heritage of the state. The statement, issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, highlighted that the revival is in perfect alignment with the administration’s agenda for economic diversification. The Governor’s endorsement of the extensive renovation has transformed the facility, originally established in 1992, into a cutting-edge Groundnut Processing Centre under the oversight of the Ministry of Women Affairs. Addressing the potential benefits for women’s economic empowerment, the Governor explained that the project was strategically placed under the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to acknowledge the vital role women play in agricultural processing.
He remarked, ‘Groundnut production once characterized the prosperity of Northern Nigeria, and we are resolute in our efforts to restore that legacy for our farmers and entrepreneurs. By revitalizing this processing centre, we are establishing a reliable market for our groundnut farmers, creating job opportunities, and laying the groundwork for value-added agricultural products that can compete on both national and international stages. This centre will act as an economic lifeline for countless women entrepreneurs throughout Katsina.’
