Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed his ambition to potentially run for the presidency of Nigeria.
During an interview on the Channels Television program Politics Today on Tuesday, Makinde emphasized that before considering a presidential bid, it is essential to address the issues within his party, the PDP. He stated, “I am confident in my ability to hold the highest office in this country and possess the necessary qualifications. However, I must first assess whether my aspirations align with the current needs of Nigerians and the direction my party wishes to take; there is still ample time ahead.”
He further remarked, “At this moment, our priority is to strengthen our party and establish a solid foundation for any future ambitions. Additionally, I want to clarify that I will not adhere to anyone else’s agenda when asked about my potential candidacy for the presidency in 2027. I will announce my intentions at the appropriate time, as my current focus is on the advancement and development of Oyo State.”
Makinde asserted, “No one will dictate my agenda; I will determine my own path. While others may express their opinions, my commitment remains to the responsibilities entrusted to me by the people of Oyo State. I am dedicated to ensuring that we deliver the benefits of democracy to our citizens, care for their needs, and develop infrastructure that will support their future.”
He added, “My plans are not influenced by speculation about federal ambitions or external pressures to run for office. If I choose to pursue a candidacy, I will do so when the time is right. One thing you can expect from Seyi Makinde is that I will never announce intentions without thorough preparation and accountability for my actions.”
