The former Chief Executive of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a statement released on Monday, El-Rufai articulated his dissatisfaction with the leadership of the APC, claiming that it has deviated from the progressive principles established by its founders.
He stated, “At this juncture in my political career, I have determined that I must pursue a different political avenue to uphold the progressive values that I hold dear. Therefore, I have chosen to align myself with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).”
El-Rufai noted that he had raised concerns regarding the party’s direction both privately and publicly over the past two years, yet he observed a lack of willingness from the current leadership to rectify the issues at hand.
He remarked, “The developments over the last two years by those who currently govern the APC have failed to recognize, let alone address, the detrimental state of affairs.”
He further emphasized, “During my eight years in office in Kaduna State, I dedicated myself to enacting progressive policies aimed at enhancing human development. Unfortunately, these achievements seem to hold little value within the current APC, which has undermined its own structure and treated its members with disdain over the past two years, a situation I can no longer tolerate.”
El-Rufai confirmed that he submitted his resignation letter to his local ward in Kaduna North Local Government Area.
He characterized the SDP as the platform for his future political endeavors and urged his supporters, along with other concerned citizens, to join him in the SDP, highlighting the necessity for a cohesive democratic platform to effectively challenge the APC in upcoming elections.
