The South-East Senate Council expressed shock and distress over the multiple deaths caused by a fallen petrol tanker in Ugwu Onyema in Enugu State.

The council, which likewise expressed misery over a similar occurrence in Niger State last weekend said through a statement by its leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Sunday in Abuja, that the lamentable occurrence has become an excessive amount.

He said it is unsettling that Nigerians were being literarily broiled on the streets because of avoidable mishaps and called on the relevant authorities to deploy immediately to stop future occurrences from ever really developing.

The council, he added, is pained that guiltless people, particularly road users, are now frequently caught up in an accident that smacks of total disregard of the country’s highways by traffic managers.

“It’s dismal and very unfortunate that we will lose many of our people, whose total number is yet to be ascertained barely a week after a similar incident in Niger State, which pain and shock Nigeria is yet to recuperate from.

“It is about time the traffic managers step up their game. The recurrence of these mishaps now constitutes a total embarrassment to the country. We can’t continue losing our people this way,” Abaribe said.

In any case, he extended the council’s sympathies to the victims’ families, the lead representative, government and people of Enugu State.
