INEC Seeks Additional Funding From FG | 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is looking for extra financing from the Federal Government in preparation for the 2027 general polls.

This was disclosed by the commission’s Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu while making an appearance before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, to defend the commission’s 2025 budget proposal.

Prof. Yakubu clarified the need for extra financing to back areas of INEC’s work.

He outlined the areas needing the financing to incorporate the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) work out, logistics for off-cycle races, replacing damaged election materials like Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), Ballot Boxes, and Voting cubicles, as well as fixing INEC offices in Local Government Areas.

He communicated that 2025 is an important year for preparing for the 2027 General Polls and focused on the significance of receiving funds on time to guarantee smooth operations.

INEC remains devoted to reinforcing the electoral cycle and supporting democracy in Nigeria.

This is as the commission earlier explained that it did not intend to obliterate the over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) dating back to the 2015 voter registration. The report is incorrect, it wrote, adding that absolutely never did it think about the obliteration of uncollected PVCs.
