Eleven political parties will be participating in the local government elections across seventeen local government areas of Plateau State, to elect chairmen and council members to run the affairs of the council areas for the next two years.
Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission showed that 75 candidates are contesting for the chairmanship positions, while 788 candidates are in contention for the council-member seats in the 355 wards.
The state electoral body is presenting a voter verification system for manual license of voters across the 4989 polling units, to improve the proficiency of the council elections.
Daniel Cishak, Chairman, Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, underscored the electoral body’s commitment to coordinate credible and fair elections.
“As moves towards the October 9 elections, I need to reaffirm our solemn promise to the people of Plateau State, we are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
“This election is unique, as we have consistently adhered to our timelines except for one postponement regarding election guidelines during the nationwide protests.” The chairman expressed.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang fired the elected chairmen alongside the council-members on assumption of office, and sworn in transition implementation committee chairmen on June 10th 2023.
On 7th September 2024, the transition implementation committee chairmen were dissolved as directors of personnel took over to prepare for the elections.
