The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has warned that anyone involved in rigging elections will face jail if he becomes President.
Obi spoke on Wednesday at an NDC town hall meeting in Nasarawa State, where he addressed concerns about electoral manipulation and the need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
The former Anambra State governor said his administration would ensure that election rigging becomes impossible by strengthening political parties and reforming the electoral process.
He said, “We’ll rig those who rig it,” while explaining that his administration would deal firmly with electoral offenders.
Obi also warned that INEC officials involved in manipulating elections would not be spared.
“Any INEC official, anybody who is involved with elections under my watch that rigs elections will go to jail,” he said.
He further called for stricter requirements for candidates seeking elective positions, arguing that anyone contesting elections should have verifiable evidence of attending primary and secondary school.
Obi said candidates who forge academic certificates or falsely claim qualifications should also face imprisonment.
He stressed that his administration would uphold the rule of law and ensure that nobody, regardless of position, is above the law.
“Nobody must be above the law; nobody will behave rascally,” Obi said.
