Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially transferred his responsibilities to May Agbamuche, who will serve as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Agbamuche holds the distinction of being the longest-serving National Commissioner within the electoral organization.
This announcement was made by Professor Yakubu on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters located in Abuja.
He requested the cooperation of the commissioners and directors of the commission in supporting Agbamuche until a permanent chairman is appointed.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu is concluding his tenure as INEC chairman, having fulfilled a two-term period totaling 10 years.
President Tinubu is anticipated to appoint a successor in the near future, pending Senate confirmation.
Yakubu was initially appointed as the INEC chairman by former President Muhammadu Buhari to manage the operations of the electoral body in November 2015, six months after he took office as President.
He completed his first term as chairman of the electoral body in 2020 and was subsequently reappointed for a second term by President Buhari.
Yakubu’s reappointment by President Buhari marked him as the first individual to serve as INEC chairman for two consecutive terms.
He succeeded Professor Attahiru Jega, during which INEC conducted numerous elections, including the general elections of 2019 and 2023.
