As a move towards curbing the incidence of unruly behaviors by passengers at the airports, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has initiated a renewed anti-violence campaign.
This was according to the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, who stated that excessive alcohol consumption is a major cause of violent behaviors onboard aircraft and in terminals.
Achimugu made this public in a statement shared on his X handle where he stated that while regulations and airport facilities are generally in place, many aviation systems are often only truly tested during actual crises. He observed that the unpredictable nature of human behavior means the system must remain not only reactive but increasingly proactive in addressing recurring challenges.
The NCAA stressed that most disruptive incidents are linked to known causes, particularly excessive drinking, flight delays, and poor communication. Armed with this knowledge, the authority believes it is imperative for relevant directorates to implement preventive measures rather than simply reacting after the fact.
The NCAA’s latest campaign aims to increase awareness among passengers while urging all aviation stakeholders to work collaboratively to address the issue. The authority’s publicist outlined plans to improve data collection, enhance crew training, enforce regulations strictly, and foster stronger collaboration with agencies such as the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and Aviation Security.
While questions are raised regarding the effectiveness of current awareness efforts and whether passengers are adequately informed of their responsibilities, the agency is calling on airlines to adopt tougher stances on misbehaviour, including potential blacklisting of repeat offenders.
The NCAA’s initiative comes at a time when global aviation authorities are also grappling with increasing reports of unruly passengers. However, with better education, stronger enforcement, and the application of technology, the NCAA believes a more civil and safe travel environment can be achieved.
“Accurate data and the will to act on it will allow the back end to solve front-end problems without bringing the system to a halt,” Achimugu said. “But this requires genuine commitment from all stakeholders, not just lip service.”
The NCAA’s renewed effort at curbing violence is part of the authority’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of passengers and aviation personnel. By working together, stakeholders can create a more harmonious and safe travel environment for all.
