The faction asserts that George Moghalu continues to be the party’s candidate for the governorship in Anambra. It cautioned against conducting new primaries, stating that it has already submitted the official candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
During a meeting with members following the party’s significant National Executive Council (NEC) gathering in Abuja, Usman emphasized that the Labour Party (LP) is ready for transformation, declaring: “This is not the moment for distractions or divisions; it is the time to unite and build.”
The meeting held on April 9, 2025, was attended by prominent party figures, including Otti, Obi, his running mate Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, elected officials, labor leaders, and representatives from the Obidient Movement.
Usman was appointed as Acting National Chair after receiving a unanimous vote of confidence from the NEC, which resolved a prolonged power struggle that had overshadowed the party’s momentum following the 2023 elections. She committed to ushering in a new era characterized by internal democracy, inclusivity, and readiness for upcoming elections.
In a statement from the party’s former National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the faction distanced itself from any primaries or results not authorized by the party’s constitution, demanding an immediate halt to any actions that could undermine the legitimate process. Following Moghalu’s election, his opponent, John Nwosu, withdrew from the previous election, citing irregularities and incompetence attributed to the Abure faction, which had been dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The faction’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, remarked in Kaduna yesterday, “The leadership of LP has been alerted to an unlawful NEC meeting called by Otti and Obi, where they continue to exist in a false sense of security and self-deception.” He accused the two of displaying a concerning level of desperation in their attempts to seize control of the party’s structure.
In a statement issued yesterday, Ifoh warned the nation, particularly INEC, about unauthorized primaries for the Anambra state governorship election allegedly organized by certain party members.
It was observed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially communicated that all political parties are required to conclude their primaries by April 10, 2025, in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022. Furthermore, in alignment with Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC has instructed the political parties to adhere to the established guidelines, which are essential for the commission’s effective planning and monitoring of the primaries.
