Nigerians have been reassured by Vice President Kashim Shettima that the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration are stabilizing the economy and lowering poverty rates nationwide.

Speaking on Monday at the 2025 retreat for newly inaugurated members of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Shettima stated that Federal Government was implementing targeted interventions aimed at expanding opportunities and enhance the standard of living for its citizens.

Understanding the Role of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission and Other Stakeholders/Agencies in Nation Building” was the focus of his keynote speech.

Represented by his technical adviser on public debt management and revenue mobilization, Mr Ibrahim Natagwandu, the Vice President stated, “This administration remains steadfast in its efforts to reposition the Nigerian economy through bold reforms aimed at reducing poverty, attracting investment, and creating an enabling environment where citizens can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The government is carrying out focused measures to stabilize the economy, increase opportunities, and enhance the standard of living for all Nigerians, guided by the administration’s strategy.

Shettima urged commission members to maintain openness, equity, and service excellence while highlighting the crucial role RMAFC plays in bolstering Nigeria’s financial stability

“You occupy a crucial place in our nation’s architecture. Your work directly impacts the fiscal health and cohesion of the nation. I urge you to rededicate yourselves to the aspirations of the government and the people,” he urged.

Umo Eno, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, also spoke and praised the federal government’s economic choices, pointing out that while some policies had temporarily hurt subnational governments’ finances, they had ultimately improved them

“Let me express our profound gratitude to the President for some of the bold steps he has taken to rejig the economy,” Eno stated.

“Even though we may have experienced a certain level of hardship associated with some of these policies, I point out that some of the policies have helped subnationals get more money from the federation account, which has allowed us to carry out a lot of projects.

We would not have the money to pay salaries if some of these decisions were not made. Certain states will be taking out loans and accruing debt for future generations.

The purpose of the retreat, according to RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu, was to acquaint and prepare new commission members with the duties and functions of the organization.

He promised that in order to secure the country’s financial stability, the commission would collaborate with all interested parties in a conscientious, patriotic, and dedicated manner.
