Tinubu Appoints 39-Year-Old Aina as New JAMB Registrar as Oloyede Steps Down

The appointment of Professor Segun Aina appears to signal a continuation of the technocratic direction JAMB has taken in recent years, particularly under Professor Is-haq Oloyede.

His background in computer engineering, network security, and digital systems suggests that the government is prioritising technological competence and institutional modernization in an agency that sits at the center of Nigeria’s tertiary education admissions process.

What stands out is not just his academic profile but the emphasis placed on his experience in examination systems and digital infrastructure. JAMB has increasingly evolved into a technology-driven institution, especially with the expansion of computer-based testing, digital verification systems, and attempts to curb examination malpractice.

Appointing someone with strong systems and data expertise indicates that the administration likely wants to deepen that transition rather than reverse it.

His relatively young age is also politically and institutionally noteworthy. At 40, Aina represents a generational shift in leadership within a major federal institution. In a public sector often criticised for recycling older political and administrative figures, the appointment may be interpreted as an effort to project merit, innovation, and youthful expertise.

At the same time, succeeding Oloyede comes with significant expectations. Under Oloyede, JAMB built a reputation for tighter financial accountability, stronger institutional visibility, and reforms in examination administration. Public scrutiny will therefore be high, particularly around transparency, technical efficiency, examination integrity, and access to tertiary education.

The emphasis on his early exposure to JAMB during his NYSC year is also symbolic. It creates a narrative of institutional familiarity and continuity, suggesting he understands the operational realities of the agency beyond purely academic credentials.

Overall, the appointment reflects the growing importance of technology and institutional efficiency in Nigeria’s education sector, especially in agencies where public trust depends heavily on transparency, fairness, and reliable digital systems.
