The Nigerian Communications Commission’s recent approval of a 50% tariff hike has prompted the Nigeria Internet Group to urge the NCC and telecom operators to ensure the increase improves telecom service delivery.
Destiny Amana, President of the organization advocating for internet usage in the country, stated that the revenue from the tariff adjustment will be directed toward network expansion and infrastructure upgrades to improve service delivery.
The organization acknowledged the economic factors behind the tariff hike but emphasized the need for the increase to result in significant and measurable improvements in telecom services. It noted that service quality across all networks has been consistently poor, with weak signals, frequent call drops, and unreliable data services becoming widespread.
Amana stated “The NCC, as the industry watchdog, must also ensure strict compliance and transparency, ensuring that no unscrupulous practices are introduced that further burden consumers without corresponding benefits.” The NIG president expressed conditional support for the tariff hike, stressing that it must lead to measurable improvements in service quality, such as better call connectivity, stronger signals, and faster, more reliable internet.
He called on the NCC to ensure telcos focus on service excellence by reinvesting the additional revenue into network expansion, infrastructure development, and quality improvements. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting a thriving digital economy that provides Nigerians with affordable, reliable, and high-quality internet services.
