Victory With Vision | Soludo & APGA’s Confident Comeback

In a political landscape that could only be envisioned in Anambra, the governorship election on November 8, 2025, concluded in a dramatic yet anticipated manner with Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) achieving a significant victory. Garnering 73 percent of the total votes and winning in 98 percent of the state’s 326 wards, the electorate’s message was unmistakable: Soludo has secured another four years to demonstrate his capabilities.

The APGA, reveling in the glow of success, promptly labeled the victory as “historic and resounding.” Its publicity secretary, Ejimofor Opara, characterized the result not merely as an electoral win but as “a referendum on performance, progressive governance, and a reaffirmation of APGA as the authentic political identity of Ndi Igbo.”

For a state recognized for its fiercely independent political stance and unpredictable voting behaviors, Soludo’s overwhelming success is noteworthy. It serves as a political endorsement wrapped in symbolism a recognition of his reform agenda, his technocratic leadership approach, and perhaps, the lasting emotional connection Anambra has with APGA, the party associated with the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

However, beneath the celebrations lies a more intricate story. While Soludo’s victory may signify confidence, it also highlights the significant fragmentation of opposition forces within the state. The Labour Party’s George Moghalu, who received just over 10,000 votes, expressed disappointment that the election was tainted by vote-buying and compromises driven by poverty. The All Progressives Congress (APC), despite its federal power advantage, failed to penetrate the APGA stronghold, with its candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu lagging far behind at 99,445 votes.

To its credit, APGA effectively played its political strategy. Its message of continuity, economic inclusion, and grassroots development resonated in a state longing for stability.
However, beyond the statistics and speeches, the lingering question is: will Soludo’s second term enhance governance or will it regress into the familiar comfort zone of political complacency that frequently follows Nigerian incumbents after their victories?

In its official statement, APGA took the opportunity to express gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for what it described as a “peaceful and fair atmosphere” during the election. The party also praised INEC for its transparency a rare commendation in a country where electoral bodies are more commonly criticized than lauded. Whether this expression of gratitude is merely diplomatic or a strategic gesture towards federal goodwill remains to be determined.

Nevertheless, the mood following the election was not entirely one of celebration. The party mourned the loss of Francis Ibe, the councillor of Owerre-Ezukala, who was tragically shot by gunmen shortly after casting his vote. APGA’s demand for justice serves as a sobering reminder that Nigeria’s democracy, while progressing, still bears the wounds of violence and insecurity.

From a political standpoint, Soludo’s renewed mandate represents both an opportunity and a responsibility. His first term was characterized by ambitious promises to transform Anambra into a “liveable and prosperous homeland.” Now, expectations are elevated, scrutiny is intensified, and the political stakes are higher. The people of Anambra have renewed their trust, but they also expect tangible results in infrastructure, job creation, and the integrity of governance.

The party’s statement concluded with a call for unity, encouraging opposition candidates to accept Soludo’s olive branch and work together for the advancement of the state. These are certainly noble sentiments. Yet, in the heated arena of Anambra politics, reconciliation is often more easily spoken than enacted.

Nonetheless, one cannot overlook the significance of this election. Soludo’s victory is not solely about APGA retaining power it signifies the people of Anambra opting for continuity over chaos, and familiarity over uncertainty. Whether this continuity will result in the genuine transformation promised during the campaign remains to be seen.
Currently, APGA revels in the triumph of a decisive victory, its flag proudly displayed across the political landscape of the southeast. However, history often serves as a reminder to the winners that each election signifies both a conclusion and a new start and the genuine indicator of success is found not in the votes cast, but in the lives of those whose support enabled the achievement.
