In response to the long-lasting political turmoil that has engulfed the state for more than a year, President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, and the House of Assembly has supported this decision.
In a statement released by its speaker, Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly also accused Siminalayi Fubara, the state’s suspended the state lead representative, of engaging in “despotic and tyrannical actions,” such as repeatedly disobeying court orders and judgments, failing to govern in accordance with his oath of office, and unconstitutionally obstructing the legislative branch of government, all of which contributed to the crisis.
The speaker said that the situation was caused by the state lead representative’s authoritarian and despotic conduct, which the courts had confirmed had unconstitutionally prevented the Rivers State House of Assembly from operating.
Amaewhule asked citizens to maintain their composure as the lone administrator assumes leadership, describing the president’s decision as being in the “best interest of the country.”
“Even if this announcement is not what we prayed for, we guarantee you all, our constituents, that we would abide by it,” the statement says.
“We urge everyone to maintain composure as the president’s sole administrator takes up his duties in the best interests of our state and country, as Mr. President has acted in the best interests of the nation.”
Total Backing for Administrator
Amaewhule urged Rivers State residents to maintain their composure while the President’s designated Sole Administrator takes over, assuring them that the Assembly would act on the declaration. He said he was sure the Sole Administrator would operate in the country’s and state’s greatest good.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly pledges its full support to the Sole Administrator and will provide any assistance required to ensure the restoration of stability and effective governance in our dear state,” Amaewhule said.
The political crisis that has engulfed Rivers State for more than a year has reached a turning point with the proclamation of a state of emergency.
