The Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, has provided an explanation for his transition from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He stated that this move was necessary to secure the advantages of his speakership for the advancement of his constituency. Agbebaku made this announcement during a plenary session on Wednesday in Benin, formally notifying the members of the House about his defection to the APC. He emphasized that his decision was not merely about party loyalty, but rather focused on the growth and development of his region. He expressed that relinquishing his position for party reasons would hinder progress in his area, indicating his dedication to serving his constituents. He also mentioned that his constituents support his decision, referencing ongoing development projects in Owan West constituency initiated by Governor Monday Okpebholo. Agbebaku asserted that his choice was made with the welfare of his electorate in mind, rather than personal gain, and highlighted the importance of prioritizing the interests of those who elected him. He reiterated his commitment to fostering unity within the House while acknowledging the necessity of having an opposition in the Assembly, assuring that the House would continue to collaborate for the benefit of the people of Edo.
The speaker finished by minimizing the significance of party affiliations within the Assembly, stating, ‘In my view, there is no party in this House.’ He emphasized that all members are collaborating with the governor to advance the state, ensuring that citizens benefit from the fruits of democracy; thus, party loyalty should not be a concern. Additionally, a proposed law to create St. Mathews Royal College of Nursing Science in Edenu-Irrua, Esan Central, has successfully passed its second reading following a debate on its approval.
