Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has extended an unconditional ‘political amnesty’ to Asue Ighodalo, the candidate representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2024 governorship election in the state.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Fred Itua, the governor emphasized that his offer of “political amnesty” to Ighodalo, who has reportedly been marginalized by his political supporters, exemplifies genuine sportsmanship.
Okpebholo characterized Asue Ighodalo’s predicament as troubling, particularly following his defeat in the election.
“I wish to publicly invite Mr. Asue Ighodalo to join us in the APC so that we can collectively promote the development of our beloved State. Given that his vision aligns with our ongoing efforts, supported by divine guidance, we believe he still has a significant role to fulfill,” he remarked.
“Godwin Obaseki, who persuaded Asue Ighodalo to participate in the elections, is currently residing in the United States of America. Many members of Obaseki’s cabinet, who once viewed Ighodalo as their personal asset, have abandoned him and are now hiding overseas.
“As someone who genuinely cares for Ighodalo’s welfare, I am convinced that this political amnesty will rescue him from his current state of humiliation and isolation. As a community, we have a responsibility to ensure the continued development of Edo State, safeguard our citizens, and diligently work towards the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Asue Ighodalo can play a vital role in these essential endeavors.”
He underscored the importance of unity and reconciliation that transcends political affiliations, assuring Ighodalo that any previous political disagreements would be overlooked should he decide to accept the unconditional political amnesty.
According to the statement, this gesture is a strategic initiative aimed at promoting peace and healing the rifts that arose during the recent governorship election in Edo State.
