Members of the legal team of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has presented a full rundown of judgements with regards to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, at the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja.
The leader of the team, Barr. Nnaemeka Ejiofor, told news correspondents that the judgements were from both homegrown and global courts directing the release of the IPOB leader.
He said the decision to advance all the declarations was in light of the assertion credited to the AGF that he wasn’t knowledgeable about Kanu’s case and that his fate would be resolved by the court.
Ejiofor additionally requested President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu and regard the various judgements, demanding the IPOB leader’s release.
On May 24, Fagbemi, said the offence of the incarcerated IPOB leader is a cumbersome one and must be settled by a skillful courtroom.
He likewise pointed out that there was an exceptional difference between Kanu’s case and that of Omoyele Sowore.
Days earlier, Kanu’s lawyers filed a preliminary objection at the Federal High Court Abuja, requesting the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, to turn down jurisdiction to proceed with the trial against him.
Part of the issue for determination, was whether the court has the jurisdiction to try Kanu for any, or all the offences brought against him in Counts 1, 2, 4,5 and 8, to subdue the said counts on the ground that the law which the said counts were predicated, was unconstitutional.
Justice Nyako excused the request by Kanu for the restoration of his renounced bail and the ejection from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), to house arrest or prison custody.
Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021 when he was apprehended in Kenya and has since continued terrorism-related trial evened out against him by the Federal Government.
