NLC President Urges Improved Conditions for Journalists, Calls for Industry Reforms

Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Joe Ajaero has advocated for improved wages, insurance coverage, and pension benefits for journalists nationwide.

During his visit to Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) President Dr. Chris Isiguzo in Abuja, Ajaero emphasized the pivotal role journalists play in Nigeria’s independence and democracy. He lamented the irony of journalists advocating for others while struggling for their own salaries.

Ajaero highlighted the deteriorating conditions in journalism despite technological advancements. He underscored the need for a mechanism to negotiate minimum wages with media employers every two years, alongside provisions for pension and insurance.

The labour leader condemned the non-payment of journalists’ salaries, urging that it be treated as a criminal offense. While acknowledging the challenges faced by publishers, he insisted on prioritizing employee welfare, particularly timely salary payments.

He also called for regulation of online media, suggesting their integration into NUJ to ensure accountability and professionalism.

In response, Isiguzo affirmed NUJ’s efforts to address industry challenges, including a review of the Code of Ethics and tackling issues like the diversion of check-off dues meant for the union.
