The legislative council of the Bosso Local Council in Niger State has decided to suspend its chairman, Ladidi Bawa Bosso.
The only female council chairman among the 25 councils, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), had previously completed her second term under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bosso becomes the second chairman to be suspended from office, following the dismissal of the Chanchaga council chairman a few months prior to the end of their tenure in November this year.
A communique regarding her suspension stated: “In accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Laws of Niger State, and after following due process, the Bosso Local Government Legislative Council, during its officially convened meeting today, Tuesday, 26th August, 2025, reviewed a motion concerning allegations of gross misconduct against the Chairman of Bosso Local Government Council, Hon. Ladidi Rakiya Bawa Bosso.
“After thorough deliberation, and in full compliance with the law, a vote was conducted. Out of the total membership of the Council, seven (7) Councillors, representing the required three-fourths (3/4) majority, voted in favor of the suspension.”
Additionally, the legislative body of the Yala Local Council in Cross River State has commenced impeachment proceedings against its Executive Chairman, Dr. Fred Okem, due to allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, and administrative negligence.
In a formal notice endorsed by 14 councillors, the lawmakers expressed a vote of no confidence in the chairman, citing multiple breaches of the Cross River State Local Government Law No. 2 of 2007.
The accusations encompass the misappropriation of council funds, the execution of inferior projects, particularly the renovation of the legislative chamber, which was allegedly conducted without legislative input at an undisclosed cost, and the failure to provide income and expenditure reports to the council.
Additional allegations against Okem include obstructing legislative oversight by preventing department heads from appearing before the council, neglecting to reside within the local government area as mandated by law, and enacting policies without adequate consultation.
The legislators assert that he marginalized the legislative branch in both budgetary and administrative issues, allegedly transforming the council into a “family affair” and utilizing government accounts to obtain loans for personal endeavors.
They further accused him of neglecting to convene regular executive committee meetings, failing to allocate funds for the furnishing of councillors’ offices nine months post-inauguration, and permitting what they termed the “overbearing influence” of his wife on local governance.
The impeachment notice has reportedly been disseminated to key stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor, members of the State House of Assembly representing Yala I and II, the Cross River State Local Government Commission, and the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nevertheless, in a prompt response, the chairman refuted any knowledge of an impeachment notice, characterizing reports circulating on social media as false and misleading in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Unah.
