The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced that starting from July 1, 2025, it will impose a fine of N250,000 or a one-month imprisonment on individuals who violate environmental regulations.
The ministry indicated that those who engage in illegal refuse dumping, street littering, or environmental defacement will be subject to these penalties.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed this information on the official X handle of the government on Wednesday, emphasizing that Lagos will no longer accept intentional environmental misconduct.
“During the media briefing held by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources yesterday, we clearly stated that Lagos will not tolerate intentional environmental misconduct.
“Effective July 1, the strict enforcement of the prohibition on single-use plastics will commence. Individuals who illegally dump refuse, litter the streets, or damage our environment will incur severe penalties, which may include a fine of up to N250,000 or a three-month jail term.
