The Okehi Local Government Area in Kogi State has instituted a curfew in response to the state’s prohibition of all political rallies and gatherings.

“The curfew, which takes effect immediately, limits movement and assemblies in designated areas,” stated Amoka Eneji, the Executive Chairman of the LGA, in a statement released on Tuesday. “Individuals found congregating or traversing restricted zones without authorization from the appropriate authorities will face arrest and prosecution. This measure aligns with the directives from the state government and the Kogi State Commissioner of Police.”

Eneji emphasized that the “decision is intended to uphold peace and order,” asserting that “the safety and security of our citizens are our highest priority.”

“We will not permit any actions that could undermine the tranquility and stability of our communities,” Eneji cautioned. He noted that his administration is “collaborating closely with security agencies to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures.”

The announcement of the curfew coincided with a planned rally by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in the region. Previously, police officials in the state had urged the lawmaker to cancel the homecoming event due to security concerns.

“The request for cancellation is warranted, as intelligence indicates that certain individuals intend to disrupt the event and disturb the peace in the State. The Command cannot risk compromising the current peace that the State enjoys,” stated William Aya, spokesman for the Kogi Police Command, in an earlier announcement.

Senator Natasha has garnered significant media attention in recent months and was suspended by the Senate last month for violating its regulations. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to recall her from the Senate.

Nevertheless, the Kogi Central lawmaker contends that she is being targeted following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
