The Kano State Government has reiterated that the ruling of the Court of Appeal regarding the emirship dispute is still in effect, rejecting assertions that it has been overturned.
Haruna Isa Dederi, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, explained that the court’s decision to grant a stay of execution does not invalidate its judgment from January 10, 2025, which confirmed the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law of 2019 and reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
In a statement to the press in Kano, Dederi remarked, “The stay of execution issued by the Court of Appeal is a routine judicial measure. It does not negate the court’s ruling but rather preserves the current situation until the Supreme Court issues its final decision.”
This legal matter arises from an appeal submitted to the Supreme Court by Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan’Agundi, a dedicated supporter of the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The government assured the public that the ongoing appeal process does not affect the reinstatement of Sanusi II.
“The judgment of the Court of Appeal is still standing and subsisting. Only the Supreme Court has the power to overturn it,” Dederi emphasised.
The government has voiced its apprehensions regarding what it termed as deceptive reports intended to mislead the residents of Kano. Dederi encouraged the public to ignore any inaccurate claims implying that the ruling on the emirship had been overturned.
“We are committed to due process and legal procedures. Our legal team is carefully reviewing the latest ruling to determine the next course of action,” he stated.
The government urged the citizens of Kano to adhere to the law and to avoid being incited by false information.
It assured the community of its dedication to preserving peace and stability in the state while the legal dispute regarding the emirship is ongoing.
