Amorighoye Mene, the Secretary of the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, has urged President Tinubu to take action regarding the proposed delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State.
Last Friday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented its plan for delineated wards and polling units, which follows a Supreme Court ruling from 2022.
The INEC’s proposal includes the delineation of wards within the Warri Federal Constituency, which encompasses the Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West Local Government Areas.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Mene criticized the electoral commission for its lack of fairness.
“We categorically reject INEC’s actions, as they are not grounded in the available statistics, even according to their own records. We have been assured that the government will address this issue, and we trust that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will take it into consideration,” he remarked.
On Wednesday, a group of protesters in Delta State disrupted operations at an oil facility with a capacity of 28,000 barrels per day in the Warri South-West Local Government Area, opposing the INEC’s proposed ward delineation for the Warri federal constituency.
In light of the unrest, the Itsekiri leader appealed to the local youth to refrain from violence. “We have been urging our community to withdraw and leave the facilities alone. We are asking them to step back. These individuals are understandably upset,” he noted.
Delineation refers to the process of dividing or mapping geographical areas into constituencies, wards, or polling units for electoral purposes, aimed at ensuring equitable representation and effective election management throughout the nation.
