The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the supplementary election for Thursday, August 21, in the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency of Zamfara State.
This announcement was made by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mahmuda Isah, during a stakeholders’ meeting currently taking place in Gusau in preparation for the event.
Dr. Isah reassured political parties and voters that the commission has implemented sufficient measures to guarantee a smooth and trouble-free process.
The supplementary election is a result of the earlier declaration of the Kaura-Namoda South Constituency by-election as inconclusive by the Returning Officer, Professor Lawal Sa’adu from the Federal University Gusau.
The Returning Officer clarified that the difference in votes between the leading party and the runner-up was smaller than the total number of Permanent Voter Cards collected in polling units where elections were cancelled, thus necessitating a supplementary election.
INEC has also urged all stakeholders, security agencies, and political parties to collaborate with the commission to ensure the success of the election on August 21.
APC refutes claims of voter intimidation
In the meantime, the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected allegations made by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it employed military personnel to intimidate voters and party agents during the Kaura Namoda South State Assembly by-election.
The APC characterized these allegations as a desperate effort by the PDP to mask what it referred to as an impending defeat.
Speaking to journalists in Gusau, the Zamfara APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, stated that the claims were unfounded and baseless, asserting that security personnel were deployed solely to maintain order and prevent electoral misconduct by thugs.
He further accused the PDP of tarnishing the reputation of security agencies in an attempt to undermine the electoral process.
The APC asserted that the residents of Kaura Namoda South participated in significant numbers to support its candidate, noting that the party’s results in the election serve as a clear reflection of its popularity in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
