President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) upon Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the conclusion of his second term in office.
This information was revealed in a statement on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
Onanuga stated that the honour is a recognition of Yakubu’s contributions to the nation, noting that Tinubu has acknowledged the departure of the INEC chairman.
The presidential spokesman conveyed that Tinubu expressed gratitude for Yakubu’s “services to the nation and his commitment to upholding Nigeria’s democracy, especially through the facilitation of free and fair elections during his two-term tenure.”
“President Tinubu expressed his appreciation to Professor Yakubu for his contributions to the nation and his dedication to maintaining Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organization of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure,” Onanuga remarked.
“In acknowledgment of Yakubu’s devoted service to the nation, President Tinubu has awarded him the honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger.
“Additionally, President Tinubu has instructed that Professor Yakubu should transfer his responsibilities to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee the commission’s operations until a successor is appointed.
