The Government of Rivers State has declared the appointment of Administrators for all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the state. This decision, sanctioned by the Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, also involves the reconstitution of several Boards of Agencies, Commissions, and Parastatals that had previously been suspended.
As stated by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Worika, these appointments will take effect on Monday, April 7, 2025.
This announcement follows shortly after a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt set April 14, 2025, to hear a case brought by human rights attorney Courage Nsirimovu from the Pilex Centre for Civic Education Initiative. Nsirimovu is seeking to prevent the appointment of LG Administrators in the state.
Justice Adamu Mohammed, who is overseeing the case, did not issue a direct restraining order but instructed that the Administrator of Rivers State be notified to appear and explain why the request to halt the appointments should not be approved. The judge remarked, “I believe it is in the interest of justice to require the respondent to appear and demonstrate why the application to stop the appointment of administrators in the 23 LGAs should not be granted.”
