Former Nigerian Minister Usani Suspended by ADC, Sparking Crisis Concerns

The African Democratic Congress, or ADC, has suspended Usani Uguru Usani, its National Vice Chairman, South-South, and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, with immediate effect, sparking a serious crisis within the opposition coalition.

The party pointed to acts judged harmful to the party’s cohesion and advancement.

The State Working Committee, or SWC, of the ADC, Cross River State Chapter, met on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and made the decision

The ADC claimed that Usani’s recent actions were against the terms of the ADC Constitution in a statement signed by James Otudor, one of the party’s state publicity secretaries, and issued in Abuja on Monday.

The statement claims that the SWC considered a number of petitions and reports that charged Usani with anti-party activities, disobedience to constituted authority, and other actions that could have damaged the ADC’s reputation, unity, and electoral chances.

“In accordance with the party’s constitution and disciplinary procedures, Dr. Usani’s suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant party organs,” the statement stated.

The statement claims that the SWC considered a number of petitions and reports that charged Usani with anti-party activities, disobedience to constituted authority, and other actions that could have damaged the ADC’s reputation, unity, and electoral chances.

It noted that Wayas has not interacted with the Cross River State leadership since taking on the position and said that her devotion and temperament now seem to be biased against the state’s ADC’s unity and expansion.

Consequently, the SWC urged the National Leadership to review her appointment and replace her with a competent, credible, and media-savvy individual from Cross River State with a verifiable record of commitment to the ideals of the ADC.

Furthermore, the Coalition Movement members who publicly stated their desire to join the ADC but have not yet formalized their membership months after doing so have raised concerns, according to the Cross River ADC.

Although the committee acknowledged that party registration is an ongoing process, it issued a warning that the ADC will not accept dual membership or permit anyone with conflicting partisanships to use its platform.

Additionally, it mentioned that a few coalition members who attended ADC planning meetings had since taken on leadership or caretaker roles in their previous political parties.

In order to avoid being excluded from leadership and decision-making roles inside the party, the statement instructed all coalition leaders and prospective members to finish registering at the ward level within seven days, ending on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

“We urge all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast as the party’s internal mechanisms for discipline, justice, and accountability take their full course,” the statement concluded.
