The Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, has announced the Federal Government’s plans to generate $100 billion annually from Nigeria’s creative sector as this according to her will significantly boost the government’s revenue, drive the sector’s growth and also create over two million jobs in the economy yearly.
Musawa outlined the ministry’s eight-point plan as follows:Nigeria Destination 2023, a national initiative designed to grow the arts, culture and creative economy under one united vision; skills development; fastrack policy frameworks;strategy governance and collaboration;smart strategic partnerships; growth targets for GDP contribution & sectoral output; enabling business environments and cultural heritage preservation and sustainability and stated that if executed properly,its financial and employment objectives can be achieved.
She explained that Nigeria’s creative economy currently only adds $5 billion to the economy with its different sub-sectors at various stages of development despite its immense potential
According to Musawa, the ministry outlined 14 key initiatives aimed at significantly increasing government revenue between $10 billion and $20 billion. These initiatives are organized into four main areas: technology, infrastructure and funding, international culture promotion, and intellectual property monetization. Under the technology pillar, the ministry plans to introduce a program offering enhanced and discounted digital content creation tools to support Nigerian creatives.
Musawa concluded by stating that the ministry has collaborated with BigWin Philanthropy, an international development organization, to roll out a transformative strategy focused on capacity building and job creation to support the government’s job creation goals in the creative sector.
