Edo Speaker Explains Defection, Member Reaffirms Commitment To PDP

Following the departure of Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, along with other members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, Frank Omosigho, the representative for Oredo East Constituency, has reiterated his commitment to the PDP. In a statement issued in Benin yesterday, Omosigho affirmed his steadfast membership in the PDP, emphasizing that despite rumors suggesting his potential defection, he was not present at the event where the Speaker and others declared their allegiance to the APC. He stated, ‘I remain loyal to the party that has provided me with the opportunity to serve my constituents. The PDP continues to be the most effective means for fostering democratic progress and development in Edo State. I encourage my constituents and supporters to dismiss any erroneous reports and to maintain their dedication to our shared objectives.’ Meanwhile, during his official announcement of defection to House members yesterday, the Speaker indicated that he joined the APC to secure the advantages associated with the Speaker’s role for the advancement of his constituency. He remarked, ‘I switched to the APC to preserve the benefits of the Speaker’s position for the betterment of my constituency. My focus is not solely on the party but rather on the development of our region. If I were to abandon this position due to party affiliation, I would be neglecting my responsibility to serve my people. Distinguished members, I wish to formally inform this House that yesterday, Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of this House, defected to the APC.’ Agbebaku further noted that his constituents supported his decision, highlighting, ‘There are ongoing developmental initiatives in Owan West Constituency initiated by Governor Monday Okpebholo.’

My decision to defect was motivated not by personal benefit, but by a dedication to the well-being of those who entrusted me with their votes. While politics often revolves around self-interest, my focus remains solely on the interests of the constituents who empowered me to serve in this capacity.
