The Senate has officially declared the defection of Senator Benson Konbowei, who represents the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection, which was revealed during plenary, occurs merely 24 hours following the resignation of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri from the PDP.
As the Senate President presented Senator Kombowei’s defection letter during the session, his Bayelsa counterpart, Senator Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), who had previously pledged not to change his allegiance, stood up and exited the chamber in visible discontent, eliciting laughter from several senators.
With this recent development, the APC now possesses a significant majority in the Senate, totaling 74 senators.
Governor Diri announced his resignation on Wednesday at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.
He indicated that his decision was based on a clear rationale, although he did not disclose the reason or the political party to which he intends to transition.
“After thorough consultations, today, October 15, 2025, I wish to inform you that, in accordance with the existing protocols, I, Governor Douye Diri, hereby resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party,” he stated.
The Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was not present, but the governor mentioned that all those absent from the meeting were engaged in official duties.
He also noted that the chairpersons of all local government areas would accompany him.
His decision received support from 23 members of the House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Abraham Ngobere.
The meeting was attended by 10 members of the House of Assembly.
