Paul Ibe, the spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stated that his principal, along with other prominent political figures such as Peter Obi and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, are engaged in discussions regarding the formation of a coalition in anticipation of the 2027 election.

He made this announcement on Thursday while responding to inquiries from a source, thereby confirming rumors about a proposed coalition aimed at displacing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Well, it is well known that there have been ongoing dialogues between Atiku Abubakar and several opposition leaders: Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai,” Ibe remarked during the program.

“Yes, this information is publicly available. Discussions are still in progress, and ultimately, they will arrive at a consensus and a strategic direction that aligns with the desires and aspirations of Nigerians.”

In the 2019 presidential election, Atiku and Obi ran under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with the former serving as the party’s candidate at that time. Despite their defeat to Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling APC, there are speculations that both influential figures may run on the same ticket in the upcoming presidential election.

When questioned about the possibility of both individuals sharing the same ticket, Ibe responded, “What I am implying is that this ticket was viable in 2019, and it remains viable today.

“However, it is up to the individuals to determine how they wish to proceed. Therefore, let us refrain from making assumptions on their behalf. They are currently in discussions,” Ibe added.

Conversations regarding a coalition have gained traction in the nation, largely attributed to the turmoil affecting the major opposition PDP and other political parties. El-Rufai, who served two terms as governor of Kaduna State under the APC, departed from the party earlier this year, citing various personal and political motivations. He has since allied with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which many believe could serve as the platform for the coalition.

Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, has, nonetheless, minimized discussions regarding the formation of a coalition.

The former governor of Anambra maintains that his focus is on creating a coalition aimed at combating poverty and other societal issues plaguing Nigeria.
