According to the Rivers State Government, the State House of Assembly resolutions pertaining to the February 28, 2025, Supreme Court ruling have not yet been delivered to it.
During its meeting on Monday, the assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule gave the State Lead Representative Siminalayi Fubara a 48-hour deadline to present the 2025 budget of the State before it.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, that as of the end of business on March 4, the document had not been received by the office of the State lead representative , the deputy state lead representative, or the Accountant-General.
Nevertheless, no specific person was mentioned in the letter as the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Danagogo cited State Lead Representative Siminalayi Fubara’s recent state broadcast on March 2, in which he reaffirmed his dedication to upholding the rule of law.
He claimed that regardless of one’s personal opinions on the Supreme Court’s ruling, the state lead representative had promised the people of Rivers State, that his administration would abide by and implement the court’s rulings in the best interest of the state.
The government further revealed that its legal team is still awaiting a certified true copy of the judgment, but promised the public that once received, the state lead representative would take prompt action upon receiving it.
The letter read, “I hereby refer to you to a letter dated March 3, 2025, regarding the aforementioned subject matter, which we came across on social media and things we discovered on social media and would want to inform you of:
We have not yet received the aforementioned letter as of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, when work ended. The letter has not been received by the state’s accountant general’s office, the state lead representative’s office, or the deputy state lead representative’s office.
In a broadcast on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Rivers State lead representative His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara made it clear that, regardless of his personal views on the rulings of the Supreme Court, he will, as a law-abiding Nigerian, obey and carry out their decisions in line with the rule of law and the interests of the state’s citizens
Many stakeholders are closely watching how the Supreme Court’s ruling will affect the state’s governance, and this development coincides with increased political tensions in the state.
