The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu as its exclusive candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje made this announcement on Thursday during the party’s national summit held in Abuja.
“As the chairman of the party and representing the National Working Committee – the only legally recognized platform to nominate a candidate in any election – I hereby confirm the various endorsements and declare President Bola Tinubu as the exclusive presidential candidate of the APC,” Ganduje stated at the event, which was attended by APC governors, ministers, and other prominent figures of the ruling party.
Thursday’s event was held to commemorate President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office, providing an opportunity for cabinet members to highlight their accomplishments.
Although Tinubu’s policies, such as the elimination of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira – the country’s currency – have faced criticism for negatively impacting Nigerians, the APC leaders present at the event asserted that the president has performed admirably and merits a second and final term in office.
“If this president has performed well, is it not we (National Assembly) who will acknowledge it? If he has not performed well, is it not we who will initiate impeachment proceedings?
“We are not initiating impeachment proceedings; rather, we are indicating that while 2023 was challenging for you, by 2027, I foresee a significant turnaround, with more states joining you,” stated Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the summit.
The endorsement was issued amidst a fragmented opposition that is finding it difficult to confront the ruling party. Prominent figures within the opposition, such as a governor and several members of the National Assembly, have switched allegiance to the APC.
During the event, Tinubu characterized these defections as a component of the “game” and expressed gratitude to the APC for supporting his candidacy for a second term in office.
He stated, “I am pleased with our current situation, and I anticipate further developments. This is the game. We operate within a constitutional democracy.”
