Moughalu asserts that the leadership crisis within the Labour Party will not hinder his chances of victory.

The political landscape of Anambra State, along with its 21 local councils, has rallied behind Governor Charles Soludo as the exclusive candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the upcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

This development highlights a significant display of unity and political maturity within APGA. The party’s convention, conducted in a vibrant yet peaceful environment, saw the participation of 3,260 accredited delegates, with 3,175 casting their votes. Soludo received all 3,168 valid votes, with only four votes deemed invalid, reflecting a unanimous endorsement of his leadership.

Christian Aburime, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, reported that Nwaegbo Uche, the Chairman of the electoral committee, officially announced Soludo as the party’s candidate, emphasizing the extraordinary support he has garnered.

In contrast, Dr. George Muoghalu, the Labour Party candidate for the gubernatorial election in Anambra State on November 8, 2025, has rejected claims that the alleged leadership turmoil at the party’s national headquarters will adversely affect his electoral prospects.

It is noteworthy that just a day after the Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision that recognized Mr. Julius Abure as the legitimate National Chairman of the Labour Party, Muoghalu, who previously served as the Managing Director of the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), was named the party’s

candidate for the governorship election in Anambra.

The political party split into two factions following the involvement of its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, with Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and other stakeholders in establishing a national caretaker committee chaired by Senator Nenadi Esther Usman.

The stakeholders justified the formation of the caretaker committee by referencing the expiration of the previous National Chairman, Abure’s, term. However, Abure rejected their claims and instead organized a contentious convention in Nnewi to secure a second term in office.

Abure’s gamble proved successful when the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed his election for a second term, declaring him duly elected, despite the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman appealing the decision to the Supreme Court.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court, which serves as Nigeria’s highest judicial authority, overturned the Court of Appeal’s ruling, emphasizing that the appellate court did not have the jurisdiction to address the issue.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court asserted that the governance of political parties is an internal matter for their members and urged politicians to step down from elected positions once their terms are completed.
