The chairman of the Silverbird Group and former senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, has voiced his support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio amid allegations made by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In a recent interview, Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, claimed to have received information regarding Akpabio’s corrupt practices during his tenure as Governor. He also labeled Akpabio as a habitual offender in matters concerning women.
In contrast, Murray-Bruce has shown his backing for Akpabio, asserting that he possesses an exemplary character and that Nigeria is fortunate to have him leading at this critical juncture.
He stated, “I know Senator Godswill Akpabio personally and well. He is a man of unquestionable integrity, and both the South-South region and Nigeria are privileged to have him in a leadership position in the National Assembly during this sensitive period of our national development.”
Addressing the corruption claims against Akpabio, Murray-Bruce mentioned that independent investigative bodies have looked into the Senate President, who has emerged unscathed, is “clean as a whistle” in each of them.
He stated that he would not passively observe as individuals try to damage the reputation of the Nigerian Senate.
“I give him my right hand of fellowship and stand firmly with him. Innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles will always come. But they can never be so powerful that they will take preeminence over facts,” said Murray-Bruce.
