The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has remained silent regarding the demands for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), while expressing disapproval of the crackdown on demonstrators advocating for the 58-year-old’s freedom.
“Without prejudice to the reasons for Nnamdi Kanu’s detention, as a political party, we have not issued any statement on this matter. What we assert is that citizens possess the right to demonstrate.
“They are entitled to protest in favor of or against any actions taken or not taken by the government. This right is fundamental and inviolable,” he stated during a current affairs program.
Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC would refrain from taking a stance on Kanu’s detention as the issue is still pending in court.
“Kanu has not been found guilty, and since the case is before the judiciary, we will not provide commentary on it. Should he be convicted, we could then discuss the rationale behind the release of criminals and drug traffickers while he remains incarcerated,” he clarified.
On Monday, law enforcement officials deployed tear gas to disperse protesters who assembled in Abuja, calling for the release of the IPOB leader.
The protest, spearheaded by activist Omoyele Sowore, commenced near Transcorp Hilton despite a court injunction and police advisories. Demonstrators shouted, “Free Nnamdi Kanu now” before security personnel discharged shots into the air to disperse the gathering.
