Rep encourages Abia South to strive for APC’s success in 2027.
The decline in the number of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislators in the Abia State House of Assembly continued today with the defection of Collins Ugochukwu, the representative for Isiala Ngwa North Constituency, to the Labour Party (LP).
Ugochukwu’s transition to the LP was formally announced in a letter he sent to the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, yesterday.
During the plenary session, the Speaker read the letter, confirming that the legislator is now affiliated with the LP. This development follows the recent departure of Lucky Nweke Johnson, the representative for Isuikwuato Constituency, who also left the PDP for the LP, citing internal conflicts within his former party and the performance of Governor Alex Otti as motivating factors.
Additionally, Rowland Dennis, who represents Isiala Ngwa South Constituency, switched from the PDP to the LP in February.
Ugochukwu’s defection today may pose a significant challenge for the PDP in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, as Isiala Ngwa North is a key area that influences the outcome of gubernatorial contests in Abia.
In a related development, Chris Nkwonta, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC), has urged the residents of Abia South Senatorial District to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and work diligently to secure victories for the party in all positions during the 2027 general elections.
The lawmaker called on party leaders in the region to initiate a vigorous membership campaign, emphasizing the need for the APC to enhance its performance, which he characterized as subpar in the 2023 elections, in order to establish itself as the dominant political force in the area by 2027.
Speaking to party supporters from the six council areas of Aba South at Akwete, Nkwonta, who represents the Ukwa West/Ukwa East Federal Constituency, assured attendees that they would reap greater benefits of democracy if they cast their votes in favor of the APC.
