Nigerians aged between 35 and 49 years have emerged as the largest voting bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections, accounting for more than 41 per cent of the country’s 103.4 million registered voters.
Data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows that 43,265,946 voters, representing 41.83 per cent of the national register, fall within the 35–49 age bracket.
The demographic profile of the register indicates a significant shift in the composition of Nigeria’s electorate ahead of the 2027 polls.
Voters aged 18 to 34 years, who traditionally constitute a major part of Nigeria’s voting population, now account for 29,777,576 registered voters, representing 28.79 per cent.
Those between 50 and 69 years constitute 22,982,900 voters, or 22.22 per cent, while voters aged 70 years and above make up the smallest group, with 7,402,291 voters, representing 7.16 per cent.
The figures were presented by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, as the commission continues preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Overall, Nigeria’s voter register now stands at 103,428,715, following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration exercise and the commission’s biometric clean-up of the register. The CVR exercise produced more than 10.7 million new registrations.
The latest figures mean voters aged 35 and above account for about 71 per cent of the electorate, giving this broader age group a potentially significant role in determining the outcome of the 2027 elections.
The gender distribution of the register shows a relatively narrow gap between male and female voters. INEC recorded 53,528,218 male voters, representing 51.75 per cent, while female voters number 49,900,497, representing 48.25 per cent.
At the state level, Lagos has the largest number of registered voters with 7,488,633, followed by Kano with 6,570,276 and Kaduna with 4,662,640.
Katsina, Rivers, Oyo, Delta, Benue, Ogun and Bauchi complete the top 10 states by registered voters.
The North-West remains the geopolitical zone with the largest voting population, recording more than 25 million registered voters, while the South-East has the lowest zonal figure at about 12 million.
Meanwhile, INEC has announced that the voter register will be displayed nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, allowing registered voters to verify their details and raise claims or objections where necessary.
The commission is also scheduled to commence nationwide collection of newly produced Permanent Voter Cards on October 9 as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
