The Federal Road Safety Corps has recognised the growing importance of its Special Marshals in efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic crashes and fatalities across Nigeria.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the volunteer arm of the FRSC as a major contributor to the agency’s road safety mandate, particularly through traffic management, public enlightenment, intelligence gathering and accident prevention.

Mohammed made the remarks on Thursday in Dutse, Jigawa State, during the investiture of Governor Umar Namadi as Patron of the Special Marshal of Nigeria and Safety Ambassador.

Represented by the Kano Sector Commander, Idris Lawal, the Corps Marshal said the contribution of Special Marshals remained critical to the FRSC’s efforts to promote safer road use.

He said stronger collaboration among the FRSC, Special Marshals and state governments would further improve road safety initiatives and help reduce crashes.

The Corps Marshal also commended Governor Namadi for his administration’s efforts to improve road infrastructure in Jigawa, noting that better roads and effective safety measures were important components of accident prevention.

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Works and Transport, Ahmad Sani, Namadi said road safety required the collective commitment of government and motorists.

He urged road users to demonstrate discipline, caution and respect for traffic regulations, while assuring that the government would continue to provide and maintain road infrastructure.

The governor disclosed that his administration had completed 26 inherited road projects and initiated additional projects aimed at improving connectivity and access to safer roads across the state.

The event, organised by the FRSC RS1 Headquarters covering Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa commands, also focused on repositioning the Special Marshal scheme for greater impact.

The conference, themed “Repositioning Special Marshal for Greater Impact: Through Strategic Partnerships and Data Driven Road Safety Intervention,” brought together FRSC personnel, road transport unions, traditional rulers and other road safety stakeholders.
