The All Progressives Congress’ (APC) decision to retain President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima on a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2027 presidential election has reignited debates over religious balancing in Nigeria’s politics.
While APC supporters argue that the ticket’s performance since 2023 justifies its retention, critics insist that the same-faith pairing undermines Nigeria’s religious diversity and could deepen feelings of exclusion among Christians.
Some party loyalists maintain that competence and governance should take precedence over religious considerations, pointing to the administration’s achievements as reasons to sustain the Tinubu-Shettima partnership. However, opposition voices and some Christian groups argue that the presidency should better reflect the country’s religious and regional diversity.
Political analysts say the renewed debate is likely to remain a major talking point as campaigns for the 2027 general election gather momentum, with political parties weighing electoral strategy against concerns over inclusivity and national unity.
