The political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections has become more heated following claims by Peter Obi that his life could be in danger due to what he described as increasing intimidation of opposition figures.
Obi, who is now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alleged that government actions against opposition politicians had heightened fears over his personal safety, even suggesting he might not be alive to contest the 2027 presidential election.
His comments immediately drew sharp reactions from the ruling APC, which dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically motivated.
The party insisted that the Tinubu administration remained committed to democratic principles and had no reason to target any opposition leader. APC officials argued that Obi’s remarks were designed to attract public sympathy and create unnecessary political tension ahead of the elections.
However, opposition parties rallied behind Obi, warning that his concerns should not be ignored.
They accused the Federal Government of creating an atmosphere that discourages opposition activities, citing alleged harassment, intimidation and restrictions on political engagements.
According to opposition leaders, democratic competition should not expose politicians to fear or insecurity, urging security agencies to guarantee equal protection for all political actors regardless of party affiliation.
