A female student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, has accused a soldier of attempting to sexually assault her during the recent invasion of students’ hostels by military personnel, an incident that has sparked outrage across the university community and beyond.
The student, identified only as Ademola, recounted her ordeal in an emotional video that has circulated widely on social media. She said she was alone in her hostel room preparing a meal when soldiers arrived in the area. Believing the situation had calmed down after the initial commotion, she remained indoors, only for the officers to return moments later.
According to her, the soldiers knocked on her door and demanded to know how many people were inside the room. After informing them that her roommate was absent, she alleged that one of the soldiers became aggressive, pinned her against her bathroom door and tried to assault her while warning her not to scream. She said she struggled to free herself before another soldier entered the room and allegedly attempted to calm her down instead of stopping the assault.
The student said she eventually raised an alarm, forcing the soldiers to flee the room. A fellow hostel resident later checked on her after hearing her screams.
The alleged assault comes after reports that soldiers from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo stormed several off-campus hostels occupied by UNIOSUN students on Monday night. Witnesses alleged that dozens of students were beaten, while mobile phones, laptops and other valuables were taken away during the operation. Some female students also claimed they were stripped and humiliated by the invading soldiers.
The incident has drawn condemnation from student leaders and university authorities, with calls for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has also demanded justice for the victims and urged the military hierarchy to take decisive action.
Responding to the allegations, the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the conduct of the personnel involved. The Army said the probe would establish the facts surrounding the incident and assured the public that any soldier found guilty of misconduct would face the full weight of military law. The command also appealed for witnesses and evidence to support its investigation.
