PDP Candidate Raises Alarm Over Reported BVAS Malfunctions

The credibility and efficiency of election-day technology came under scrutiny on Saturday as concerns emerged over the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in parts of Ekiti State during the ongoing governorship election.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Oluwole Oluyede, expressed dissatisfaction over reported technical challenges affecting voter accreditation at some polling units, warning that such issues could impact the overall voting experience if not addressed promptly.

According to the opposition candidate, delays associated with BVAS functionality created difficulties for some voters seeking to exercise their franchise, resulting in longer waiting times and concerns among party supporters and election observers.

The complaints have once again brought attention to the critical role technology plays in Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly as stakeholders continue to assess the effectiveness of reforms introduced to enhance transparency and electoral integrity.

Across several polling locations, election officials were observed working to resolve operational challenges as voters patiently awaited accreditation and voting. While many polling units reportedly proceeded without significant disruptions, isolated complaints regarding technical difficulties generated debate among political actors and election stakeholders.

Political observers note that elections are often judged not only by the final results but also by the efficiency of the processes leading to those results. Consequently, the performance of electoral technology remains a key indicator in evaluating public confidence in the system.

For many voters, the concern is less about political parties and more about ensuring that every eligible citizen is able to vote without unnecessary obstacles. Electoral experts have repeatedly emphasized that technology is intended to strengthen confidence in elections and should facilitate, rather than hinder, voter participation.

The concerns raised during the Ekiti governorship poll are likely to fuel broader discussions about the readiness of electoral infrastructure ahead of future elections, particularly as Nigeria gradually shifts attention toward the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, election activities continued across the state as officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, party agents, and accredited observers monitored developments at polling units and collation centres.

As voting progressed, stakeholders called for patience, professionalism, and adherence to electoral guidelines, while urging electoral authorities to swiftly address any technical issues capable of affecting voter confidence.
