The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for celebrating the inauguration of judges’ housing projects in Abuja, warning that such actions could create doubts about the independence of the judiciary.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that providing accommodation and welfare for judicial officers is a constitutional responsibility of government and should not be presented as a political favour deserving partisan praise.
According to the ADC, portraying the project as an act of generosity by political leaders risks sending the wrong signal to Nigerians and could undermine public confidence in the neutrality of the courts.
The opposition party maintained that while it supports efforts to improve the welfare and working conditions of judges, such initiatives should be viewed as part of government’s obligation to strengthen democratic institutions rather than as achievements for political celebration.
ADC therefore urged political actors to exercise caution in their public comments on judicial welfare matters, stressing that the Judiciary must not only remain independent but also be perceived by citizens as free from undue political influence.
