Orji Kalu Reveals Ongoing FG Discussions On Nnamdi Kanu’s Case

In a political environment already fraught with distrust, ethnic strife, and conflicting national aspirations, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has entered one of Nigeria’s most contentious issues: the conviction and future of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). With a single impassioned interview, the senator has rekindled the national discourse on whether Kanu’s situation should be addressed in a courtroom or through negotiations.

Following Kanu’s recent conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges related to terrorism, he asserted today that “the problem of Nnamdi Kanu is what we need to solve via a political process.” This was a bold, risky, and highly strategic assertion that immediately sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape.

For years, the Southeast has been vocal about the need for dialogue, arguing that the military and judicial approach to IPOB has only exacerbated resentment. Now, a notable APC senator from the region is publicly and unapologetically voicing that same perspective, particularly at a time when Kanu has received a life sentence.

Kalu’s involvement is not a spontaneous realization. The former governor of Abia State revealed that he has been in continuous discussions with the Federal Government regarding Kanu’s situation. In a rare political disclosure, he shared the pressure he exerted on former President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate Kanu’s release back in April 2017, a pressure he claims ultimately bore fruit, aided by Buhari’s close associates, including Mamman Daura and then Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

However, Kalu did not shy away from addressing the human toll of IPOB’s actions. He expressed sorrow over job losses, business closures, and the deaths of “dozens of Igbo” in the Southeast resulting from extended sit-at-home orders and violent confrontations. The senator’s message was unequivocal: the Southeast is suffering, and enduring peace cannot be achieved solely through judicial decisions.
Kalu did not hold back in expressing the human toll of IPOB’s actions. He expressed sorrow over job losses, business closures, and the deaths of “dozens of Igbo” individuals in the Southeast, which resulted from extended sit-at-home orders and violent confrontations. The senator’s message was unequivocal: the Southeast is suffering, and true peace cannot be achieved solely through judicial decisions.

Nevertheless, the legal aspect must not be overlooked. Justice James Omotosho delivered a harsh ruling, sentencing Kanu to life imprisonment on four counts of terrorism, along with additional sentences of 20 and five years for other offenses, all to be served concurrently. The judge maintained that the prosecution established its case “beyond reasonable doubt,” referencing broadcasts allegedly made by Kanu that posed threats of national disruption and violence.

The ruling has predictably heightened tensions. IPOB’s consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, has pledged to contest the verdict at the Court of Appeal, indicating that the legal struggle is far from concluded.

In the meantime, Kalu is acting promptly. He has revealed intentions to reach out to Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi to counsel President Tinubu directly on the best approach to address the political aspects of the crisis. For many observers, this is where the true intrigue lies: one of the most powerful politicians from the Southeast advocating to the highest office in the country for a course of action that the courts may not endorse.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the inquiry becomes increasingly pressing: is Kanu simply a legal prisoner, or a political time bomb poised to detonate once more?

Kalu has articulated his stance clearly. Now, the nation awaits to see if the Presidency will heed his advice or reinforce its current position.
