500 NNPP Defectors Will Be Fully Absorbed Into APC — Umar Ganduje

Kano politics is perpetually tumultuous and on Sunday, it flared up once more. This time, the disturbance originated not from the typical power factions, but from a significant defection that reverberated throughout the state’s political arena. Five hundred members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) a party previously believed to have a stronghold in Kano deserted and pledged their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the true spectacle? It was Ganduje’s son, Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar, positioned at the heart of this political upheaval, assuring the defectors that they would be welcomed not as outsiders, but as integral APC members.
And let there be no doubt: his remarks were not simply courteous they represented a strategic political maneuver.
At the Armani Event Centre, the ambiance resembled less a reception and more a coronation. Umar, the Executive Director of Technical Services at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), spoke with confidence, almost provocatively, commending the defectors for possessing “the courage to recognize the truth.” A slight? Possibly. In Kano politics, nothing occurs by chance. To label APC as “the strongest party in Africa” transcends mere commendation it serves as both a caution and a proclamation of supremacy.
Yet, the defections constituted only a portion of the narrative. What genuinely energized the audience was the wave of empowerment that accompanied the occasion. Over 3,000 APC supporters statewide received agricultural and economic support items in what can only be characterized as one of the most vigorous grassroots mobilization efforts Kano has witnessed this year. From tricycles to mini-trucks, from fertilizers to solar-powered pumps, Umar did not merely hand out items he disseminated political clout.
To onlookers, it was evident: this was not philanthropy. This was a calculated strategy.
A statement from Abuja, released on behalf of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, highlighted that beneficiaries were chosen from all 44 LGAs in the state. The implication?
The Ganduje political apparatus is far from dormant it is reconfiguring, broadening its reach, and regaining territory.
Engr. Umar himself suggested this new momentum, characterizing the empowerment programme as merely “the tip of the iceberg.” If this marks the beginning, one can only envision the political fireworks that will follow in subsequent phases, particularly with the anticipated emphasis on youths and women two demographics that frequently influence electoral results in Kano.

However, beneath all the celebration, a more profound political narrative is emerging.

The NNPP’s previously thriving influence seems to be diminishing. A defection of 500 in one fell swoop is not merely a statistic; it conveys a political message to the Kwankwasiyya movement: your monopoly is faltering. By personally welcoming the defectors, Umar has positioned himself not only as Ganduje’s son but also as an emerging power broker capable of influencing the future of the APC in Kano.

His concluding message to the audience encapsulated everything: he is not just elevating his constituency; he is elevating Kano. In doing so, he is fortifying the APC’s foundations in anticipation of the forthcoming political confrontations.

Sunday’s event was not simply a defection ceremony.

It was a proclamation of intent.
A realignment of power.
And a reminder that in Kano, while political loyalty may waver, political ambition remains ever vigilant.
