Why I Oppose Tinubu’s Policies – Dalung

Nigeria’s political landscape is familiar with assertive voices, yet when Solomon Dalung, the passionate former Minister of Youth and Sports, speaks, his words resonate profoundly. Renowned for his candidness and patriotic zeal, Dalung has once again provoked significant political discourse, this time by openly expressing his dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

During an interview From the Sources that aired Sunday night, Dalung, now a key member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), did not hold back as he characterized President Tinubu’s leadership as ’emperor-like’, accusing the administration of centralizing power at the cost of democratic accountability. His sharp critique mirrors a growing frustration among Nigerians who are disillusioned with policies that seem disconnected from the everyday experiences of citizens.

Dalung’s remarks were not those of a resentful politician; rather, they were the reflections of a man observing a system he once supported deteriorate into something unrecognizable. He expressed concern that instead of fostering an inclusive government, Tinubu’s policies have marginalized rational voices, stifled opposition, and substituted collective governance with a singular authority. ‘This administration,’ he asserted, ‘is no longer attuned to the people, it is dictating to them.’

The former minister’s criticism was anticipated by those familiar with his political journey. A firm advocate for social justice, Dalung has frequently contested the elite-centric governance model that favors the retention of power over the welfare of the populace. His opposition to Tinubu’s policies is, therefore, not a personal vendetta, it is a matter of principle. For Dalung, Nigeria’s democracy should not cater to the interests of a select few but should embody the will of the majority.

In his assessment, he depicted a concerning scenario of Nigeria’s present condition, one marked by escalating poverty, insecurity, and an economic trajectory that appears to lack a human-centered approach.

He contended that the policies implemented under Tinubu’s administration have placed a heavy burden on ordinary Nigerians, while the elite continue to prosper without consequence. “We cannot persist with a system where leadership resembles royalty and the populace is treated as subjects,” he cautioned.

His analogy of Tinubu’s leadership approach to that of an emperor has elicited both support and backlash. The president’s supporters have dismissed Dalung’s comments as mere political opportunism, accusing him of leveraging criticism to maintain his relevance. However, for many Nigerians, his statements resonate with uncomfortable truth. The removal of the fuel subsidy, the reforms in currency, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis have left millions in hardship, and the government’s responses often appear detached from the lived experiences of the populace.

Dalung’s critique also highlights a more profound crisis within Nigeria’s political awareness, the diminishing space for dissent. In a democratic society, opposing viewpoints should not be suppressed or mocked. Rather, they ought to act as reflections, illuminating the deficiencies in governance. Dalung’s position serves as a reminder that democracy thrives not on uniformity but on brave dissent.

Although he may hold a minority position politically, his defiance resonates with a growing discontent among Nigerians who feel betrayed by the promises of leadership. The ADC leader is not simply criticizing Tinubu’s policies, he is advocating for the restoration of democratic integrity. His message conveys that leadership should foster hope, not instill fear; it should encourage dialogue, not impose decrees.

The political turmoil surrounding Dalung’s remarks also indicates a potential transformation within opposition politics. His voice, alongside others in the ADC and beyond, could redefine the political narrative as future elections approach. As citizens increasingly demand accountability, leaders who dare to speak truth to power, even at personal risk, may emerge as the new embodiment of political significance.

At its essence, Dalung’s message is both straightforward and impactful: Nigeria cannot be ruled like a monarchy; it must be governed as a democracy.

The way forward, he asserts, must encompass empathy, collaborative governance, and a sincere dedication to national unity.

As he remained steadfast in his beliefs, it was apparent that Solomon Dalung’s opposition stems not from personal ambition, but from a profound conviction that Nigeria is worthy of more and that remaining silent in the face of escalating authoritarianism is no longer viable.

Whether his statements will spark a movement or simply dissipate as yet another political catchphrase is yet to be determined. However, one fact is indisputable in a country yearning for authentic leadership, Dalung’s dissent has shattered the silence.
